Umbilical Hernia Surgery
In most cases, your umbilical hernia operation will be performed on an outpatient basis and you can usually go home the same day.
The procedure can be conducted open or as a minimally invasive surgery. In the open procedure, an incision is made around the umbilicus, the muscle surrounding the belly button. After finding the defect, the surgeon makes the necessary repairs. If the hernia is small, sutures will be used to close it. Surgical mesh is often used on larger umbilical hernias to provide additional strength and support.
In a minimally invasive procedure, laparoscopic instruments are inserted through much smaller incisions. They are then guided to the umbilicus, where the surgeon will use a video monitor to confirm the location of the hernia. Once the hernia is removed, small sutures are used to close the hole or alternately surgical mesh is used to close the hole in a more involved hernia. The use of minimally invasive techniques offers patients fewer complications and faster recovery.
Usually, you’ll be able to go home as soon as you are awake and can walk. Your surgeon may request that someone drive you home. You’ll experience some soreness in the first one to three days. This will eventually subside. Eventually you will be able to return to your normal routine and you should be able to be up and about the day after you have surgery.
