Umbilical Hernia
An umbilical hernia can happen when the muscle surrounding the belly button weakens. This allows some of the tissues of the abdomen to poke through. In most cases, this occurs in babies, but adults can also get an umbilical hernia, which finds its way through the umbilical scar.
When the lining of the abdomen pushes through the wall, it creates a balloon-like sac. This type of hernia does not get better with time, and if left alone, can develop complications.
It’s very easy to notice this type of hernia. You may see a bulge under the skin near the belly button or experience pain when lifting heavy objects, standing or sitting for long periods of time or coughing. If the pain is severe, the hernia could be strangulated and you should contact your doctor immediately.
An umbilical hernia can be treated with a minimally invasive surgery, conducted by the skilled surgeons at Celebration Colorectal. If you're interested in learning more or would like to speak with a doctor, please make an appointment today.
