Inguinal Hernia Surgery

In most cases, inguinal hernia surgery is conducted using minimally invasive techniques. This results in less pain and a reduced recovery timeframe, as well as fewer complications.

After administering a local, spinal or general anesthetic, your surgeon will make several small incisions in the abdomen. These will provide access for laparoscopic instruments and a small camera. Once the inguinal hernia is located, your surgeon will remove the hernia sac. To strengthen the abdominal wall and prevent the hernia from returning, a synthetic mesh or patch may be added during the procedure.

The chance of the hernia coming back is small, roughly 1 to 10 in every 100 surgeries. If it does return, it will usually be within five years of the surgery.

Following surgery you will be placed on light duty so you can allow the incisions to heal naturally. You should be able to return to your regular routines within two to four weeks. If you experience tenderness in the abdomen in the week following surgery, this is normal and should go away on its own.
