Inguinal Hernia

When the groin muscle has a weakness, a portion of the intestine may bulge through it. Known as an inguinal hernia, it can be present at birth or develop over the years. It can be small in nature, allowing just the lining of the abdominal cavity to protrude. However, in more severe cases, the intestine may move through the hole in the muscle instead.

While it can be present at birth, allowing a small defect to enlarge over time, an inguinal hernia can also be caused by straining repetitively when having a bowel movement. Inguinal hernias are most often found in men.

Unfortunately, an inguinal hernia will not heal on its own. Even though the hernia may begin as a small lump, it can grow much larger over time. It may change in size depending on your activity, but it will still require surgery eventually.
