Incisional / Ventral Hernia Surgery

The need to have surgery for an incisional hernia depends on several factors. The specialists at Celebration Colorectal may recommend surgery if the hernia is very large, is cosmetically unappealing or is causing pain.

Incisional hernia surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Even though it is performed using minimally invasive techniques, the surgery requires a brief stay in the hospital.

The procedure begins with an incision on either side of the hernia. Laparoscopic instruments are inserted through these openings. Using a video feed, your surgeon will isolate the portion of the lining that is pushing through the muscle. Known as the hernia sac, the surgeon returns it to its correct place.

If the defect was small, it will be closed using sutures. If it is large, a mesh graft may be used to cover the hole and keep the hernia from returning. In rare cases where patients have a history of rejecting surgical implants, sutures may have to be used on larger openings. When the repair is completed the incisions are closed and allowed to heal.

You should be able to return to your routine within two to four weeks. Your abdomen may feel sore and tender in the first week, but over time the incisions will heal and any discomfort will dissipate. Your doctor will go over the post operative care routine for an incisional hernia, which can include avoiding lifting heavy objects or straining too much during a bowel movement.
