Flank / Lumbar Hernia

While relatively rare, lumbar hernias can occur in patients, particularly in those between the ages of 50 and 70. Men get lumbar hernias more frequently than women and the vast majority, two-thirds, can be found on the left side of the body.

In most cases lumbar hernias are caused by post-surgical or blunt force injuries, such as an automobile accident. They can occur anywhere along the lumbar region, but are most common along the superior lumbar triangle, which is bordered by the 12th rib.

Those suffering from a lumbar hernia may not have any symptoms. If there are symptoms, it’s usually a backache, flank pain or a dragging sensation. Left untreated, these hernias can grow to large proportions.

If a lateral hernia is suspected, your doctor may conduct upper or lower GI contrast studies or a CT scan to get a better view of the hernia.

If surgery is an option, surgeons at Celebration Colorectal will consider the extent and location of the lateral hernia and make a recommendation that has the best chance for success.
