Pilonidal Disease

Pilonidal cysts form along the cleft of the buttocks right along the tailbone, and can contain skin debris and hair. They are more common in men, mostly between the ages of 15 and 24.

Researchers believe the source of these cysts is loose hairs in the skin. The body responds to it by becoming inflamed, resulting in a cyst. People who have sedentary occupations are more likely to develop pilonidal cysts. In fact, it was known as “Jeep disease” in World War II as soldiers would get them from riding in Jeeps for long periods of time.

If you have pilonidal cysts you may not experience any symptoms. There may be a small opening or dimple in the area. If it becomes infected, however, you’ll have lower spine pain, the region will be red and feel warm to the touch, you may have a bit of swelling and you may notice some draining of pus in the area of the lower spine. Though rare, pilonidal cysts can develop in other places on the body, especially one the hands.

Diagnosis is straightforward. Your doctor will examine the area to confirm the presence of pilonidal cysts. There’s no need for additional tests or blood work.
