Nonsurgical Options

Non-surgical Options

Surgery is never a preferred option. It is usually only suggested when non-surgical interventions either fail to correct the issue or simply won’t be effective.

Non-surgical treatments can take many forms and depend largely on the type, extent and nature of the colorectal, hernia or abdominal wall problems you are facing.

Lifestyle Changes

Depending on the condition, doctors may recommend lifestyle changes such as a change in diet, more effective hygiene practices or topical applications. Sometimes the symptoms of the disorder can be adequately controlled, reducing the severity of the problem so that you can enjoy an active life free of pain or discomfort.

Medications

Another option is the use of medications. These can be effective in reducing inflammation, correcting nutritional deficiencies, relieving symptoms or decreasing pain. Again, the effectiveness of medications depends largely on the nature of the health issue, but drug therapies can be an effective alternative to surgery.

Options can include anti-inflammation drugs, corticosteroids, immune system suppressors, anti-diarrheals, and fluid replacement medications. Some off the shelf products can also provide relief on a temporary basis. In some cases, as in select herniations, even antacids may prove effective.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is used to combat certain forms of colorectal cancer and can be employed either alone or in concert with chemotherapy and surgery. The goal of radiation therapy is to stop the spread of cancer cells, shrink tumors and reduce pain.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is also used to combat certain forms of colorectal cancer. The cancer killing drugs are used alone or as part of a larger course of treatment and are administered orally or intravenously. The goal of chemotherapy is to attack the cancerous cells and eliminate them. As a leading research facility, Celebration Colorectal has some of the most advanced therapies available to our patients who are facing colorectal forms of cancer.
