Diverticula Surgery

If health issues related to diverticulosis, including diverticulitis, don’t respond to non-surgical treatment, the colorectal health specialists at Celebration Colorectal may recommend surgery instead.

If surgery is required, surgeons at the Celebration Colorectal will make several small incisions in the abdomen so that the colon can be accessed with small instruments and a laparoscope, which provides a live video feed of the region. After locating the area affected by the diverticula, the small sacs that form in the colon, your surgeon will remove that portion of the colon and then rejoin the two sections.

If the infection is severe, the colon may have to be removed in a procedure known as a colostomy. In this procedure, the end of the colon is connected to a hole in the side of the abdomen so waste can be collected in a disposable bag.

The resection of the colon can help the attacks from returning and reduce the chance of complications.

If you are a candidate for diverticula surgery, the colorectal experts at Celebration Colorectal will discuss the procedure and answer all your questions and concerns, including post operative care.
