Cyst Removal Surgery

Initially, doctors at Celebration Colorectal will give you a local anesthetic to drain the area and then open the abscess, remove the debris and drain the fluid. It is then packed with dressing and allowed to heal naturally. In the vast amount of cases this is sufficient to eliminate the pilonidal cyst.

Alternately, the doctor may elect to use what is known as a closed wound procedure. After the area has been cleaned the wound is stitched closed instead of being allowed to remain open. The benefit is that the healing time is reduced and there’s less chance the cyst will return.

Regardless of the procedure used, it’s very important that you care for the wound properly. Your doctor will go over the care regimen with you following surgery. This may include changing the dressings regularly (if the wound is left open) and shaving around the area to make sure other hairs don’t enter the wound as it heals.
