Crohns Disease

Crohn’s Disease causes the digestive tract to become inflamed. Any part of the GI tract can be affected, but in most cases the condition affects the lower part of the small intestine, known as the ileum. The resultant swelling of the lining can cause pain and diarrhea.

The symptoms can be similar to any other intestinal tract problem, including pain in the lower right of the abdomen and diarrhea. Some patients also report weight loss, rectal bleeding, skin problems and fever. If the bleeding is persistent, it can cause anemia.

To confirm the presence of Crohn’s Disease, doctors at Celebration Colorectal will conduct a thorough physical exam, including blood tests to check for anemia and an upper GI series, which can pinpoint areas of inflammation or abnormalities in the intestine. Your doctor may also perform a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy to view the area via a video feed. This allows the doctor to see the region first hand. A biopsy may be taken in certain cases.

With proper diagnosis and treatment, Crohn’s Disease can be managed, allowing the patient to live a full and productive life.
