Anal Warts

Also known as condyloma cuminata, anal warts are believed to be caused by human papilloma virus (HPV), which can be highly contagious. They are the result of direct contact with an infected person and first appear as tiny blemishes, either around the anus or in the genital region. Eventually they can grow to the size of a pea. You may not even notice them since they grow gradually and are flesh-colored. If they are beginning to grow together, they may even resemble cauliflower.

Because they aren’t painful and grow so slowly, you may not even notice them until they are fairly large. Some of the symptoms of anal warts are: bleeding, itching, the formation of ulcers, mucous discharge and a noticeable mass when you touch the affected region.

Your doctor will confirm the presence of anal warts. In most cases this involves a complete exam of the genital region to determine the extent of the warts and location. If they aren’t easy to detect, a solution containing acetic acid will cause them to turn white after a few minutes. Your physician may also recommend a Pap smear if you’re a woman. An anoscope may be employed to see if there are warts in the anal canal.

The presence of growths doesn’t necessarily indicate the presence of anal warts. Other growths such as skin tags and piles may feel similar. It’s best to have your doctor at Celebration Colorectal confirm the diagnosis with an examination.
