Anal Cancer Surgery

Anal cancer surgery will be recommended if other options have not achieved the desired results. It may also be recommended if the cancer returns following chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Local resection is one option. Your surgeon will use this procedure to cut a small tumor that hasn’t spread from the region. Tumors that have developed in the lower part of the anus are the best candidates for local resection.

In cases where the tumor is persistent or recurring, it may be necessary for doctors to perform an abdominoperineal resection instead. This involves the removal of the anus, rectum and part of the colon. In its place, an opening in the abdominal wall is created to allow feces to collect in a disposable bag (colostomy). In some cases, the lymph nodes may also be removed in the region if they show signs of cancer.

After the procedure, follow up visits will be needed to determine the success of the operation and to make sure that the cancer hasn’t returned.
